Changing Over

Communities in Economic transition is a Cooperative Extension national partnership initiative that involves six southwestern states (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah) working together to help rural communities establish and maintain diverse economic environments and local area entrepreneurship that will support local employment, income and public revenues. Dolores, Colorado Networking with nearby communities in southwestern Colorado and southeast Utah, Cooperative Extension assisted Dolores County in writing grants, created business-oriented workshops and incentives, identified sources of business financing and development, helped with business retention and expansion and leading-edge business skills. As a result, the county’s economic base was strengthened by the establishment of seven new businesses, expansion of a forest-based-product company, grant funding for a public-access cable channel, and dollars for development of a planning commission.
