 Not On Corn Alone

cattle eating finishing diet of barley and potatoesWashington producers who feed their cattle a finishing diet of barley and potatoes struggle to compete with the marketing image of corn-fed beef from the Midwest. However, a panel of taste testers assembled by Washington State Extension specialists couldn’t tell the difference. Producers now use a special brand to promote Washington beef. They are also marketing Washington-grown barley to domestic and foreign cattle feeders. Washington producers are also benefiting from the new Mobile Meat Processing Unit, which conducts on-farm USDA inspection of beef and lamb. The unit is a cooperative effort among local producers, Washington State Extension and the Lopez Community Land Trust.
