Reducing Livestock Waste

Constructed wetlands help livestock owners reduce waste runoff from feedlots into groundwater. Researchers at Oregon State have constructed wetlands constructed nine demonstration research wetlands at their dairy farm to monitor the effectiveness of treating dairy wastewater for subsequent discharge. About 20% of the state’s 500 dairies are expected to implement constructed wetlands this year, saving $800,000 annually. To preserve drinking water quality, American Samoa Community College is teaching composting methods to farmers who raise small pigs to help reduce waste runoff that now pollutes the island of Tutuila’s few remaining year-round freshwater streams.
