More People, Less
Water
The Las Vegas Valley is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation
with nearly 1,000 new residents each week and more than six million
tourists per year. The University of Nevada, Reno’s Center for
Urban Water Conservation in Las Vegas conducts public-education
campaigns and environmental studies to help consumers and businesses
save water. Researchers there have found a way to blend wastewater
with salty shallow-aquifer water for a lower-cost method of watering
athletic fields, golf courses and parks without any loss of turf
quality. This system will free up quality water in the summer months
and if used just four out of seven days for six months will create a
40 % water savings. New Mexico State Extension urban
horticulture specialists are helping homeowners, gardeners and grounds
managers practice wise water management, while maintaining attractive
landscapes. The economic impact of water efficient practices in
statewide horticulture programs exceeds $1 million annually.
