Delivering The Dirt On Diabetes

About 16 million people in the United States have diabetes, but the disease is not spread evenly across the country. African Americans are 1.7 times more likely to contract the disease, native Americans nearly three times as likely and Hispanics twice as likely. About 95 percent have Type II, which is treatable through diet, exercise and weight loss. Western states are addressing these cultural and dietary issues through individualized diet and exercise programs, such as Nevada’s Ounce of Prevention, Utah State’s Fit for Life, New Mexico State’s Dining with Diabetes, Colorado State’s La Cocina Saludable (Healthy Kitchen), Arizona’s Healthy Weight for Life and California’s Cooking for Better Health. Graduates of these programs show significant reductions in fat intake and reduced risks of diabetes
