Once Burned

Even as wildfire ravaged millions of acres of forest and rangelands throughout the West during summer 2000, Montana State helped 400 landowners begin the recovery process. Multi-agency Living With Fire workshops explained the effects of the disaster and how to conduct restoration treatments. In Nevada, the “Living With Fire” tabloid, explaining defensible space techniques, was circulated in newspapers in 11 states. Researchers developed 72 wildfire-rating maps on various vegetation types to assist firefighters. Nevada’s first Fire Forum sparked a Fire Safe Council to help communities reduce loss of lives and property. Idaho and Colorado State foresters found that interest in fire protection workshops heated up during the serious wildfire season. Workshops in northern Idaho offered practical ways to lessen wildfire danger. Small acreage landowners in Colorado were helped with information on how to live in forested areas by trimming vegetation, thinning trees, and ensuring that firefighters can reach the property.
