Escape To Loon Lake

students escaping fire to stay at 4-H campYellow school buses stuffed with sleeping bags and other camp gear carried 87 children and five adults away from Montana’s Bitterroot Valley in mid-August while firefighters struggled to save homes and communities. Their destination was a specially organized 4-H camp near scenic, fire-free Flathead Lake. Montana State’s Ravalli County Extension offered the campers the normal fun activities and a haven from worry. New Mexico’s Spanish-speaking residents stunned by the Cerro Grande fire received some advice from California’s Spanish Broadcast and Media Services. The package of fire-related information offered tips for managing credit after a disaster, fire-related insurance claims and helping children cope. Utah State turned a 600-acre wildfire site into an outdoor classroom for elementary students from the Edith Bowen Laboratory School. A Huntsman Foundation grant bought plants and seeds the students will plant to heal the land.
