Reaching Out To Local High Schools

Feed Your Brain middle school programIn an attempt to improve state Standardized Test scores, Utah State has developed a 60-minute video program and an 88-page educators’ guide that boosted scores by 20 percent. Washington State began “Feed Your Brain,” a middle school program that improved passing grades by 60 percent; 44 percent improved their reading by one grade level and 12 percent improved reading by two grade levels.

In Nevada a large percentage of capable high school students are not being sufficiently challenged. Through the “Early College” program at UNR, more than 1,500 students have participated, with virtually all going on to attend an accredited four-year institute. Chad Bingham, McQueen H. S. 1999, acknowledged ”with the boost from Early College, I was able to complete my first three semesters of calculus, before ever being accepted to UNR.” Of those attending UNR, 71 percent enrolled in the honors program.
