Who To Call And What To Buy

Through a yearlong risk management program, Nevada Extension educators teach futures and options techniques to ranchers. Participants boosted their net income by an average of $20 per head, for a combined increase of $30,000. One participant saved $70,000 using the techniques. In American Samoa, an economist developed two new directories that will help local agricultural producers connect with restaurants, hotels and other businesses. The American Samoa Local Producer’s Directory lists 157 local farmers so far, who produce 76 different commodities. The American Samoan Marketing Directory contains listings for 80 retailers and businesses to date. Arizona researchers showed livestock producers how to earn an additional $40 to $50 per animal by turning normally discarded products into sellable items such as pet chews. One new item combines meat byproducts with peas, carrots and other ingredients, producing a meat snack for pets that has a long shelf life.
