EECB751A Advances in Ecological Theory Instructor Dr Ashley Sparrow Department of
Natural Resources and Environmental Science Office:
Room 118, Knudtsen Resource Center (1000 Valley Road, east of main campus) Email: asparrow@cabnr.unr.edu Aims of Course We will read and discuss classic and recent literature concerning major conceptual breakthroughs and theoretical advances in ecology in the last 100+ years. The intent is to be broad-ranging rather than comprehensive (well, you just can’t be comprehensive in just 30 hours of classes on the whole of ecology in one semester!), and to focus on critique and putting concepts into context of the whole discipline and the historical development of its underlying philosophy and methodology. The ultimate, subversive aim is to provide graduate students with the confidence to tackle their EECB comprehensive exams within a strong framework of knowledge about ecology. Note: Only modest undergraduate levels of mathematics, physics and chemistry are assumed, even for some of the more esoteric literature!
Assessment Assessment is by level (quality and quantity) of contribution to discussion in class meetings. There are no assignments or exams.
