A Jewel In The Great Basin: Fisheries And Resource Investigations Of Summit Lake

The fishery at Summit Lake is well known for supporting Lahontan cutthroat trout. A team of scientists from the University of Nevada, Reno are attempting to understand the fishery and food web energetics of Summit Lake. This new information will assist managers in planning future monitoring and management activities at the lake.

Adapted Indian Ricegrass for the Great Basin

Cultivated varieties of Indian Ricegrass currently used in restoration do not originate from the Great Basin and may not be the best adapted to all areas. The objective of this research is to collect, evaluate, and develop seed transfer zones specificly for the Great Basin.

Arid Lands Crops for Biofuels, Edible Oils and Biomaterials

Nevada's arid lands can potentially contribute to biofuels production, particularly for crops that have relatively low water requirements, and are adapted to Nevada's Great Basin growing conditions. This project will examine some of the most promising candidate crops.

Characterizing Mountain Lion Distribution, Abundance, And Prey Selection In Nevada

With this project we hope to clarify many of the questions and possible misconceptions surrounding mountain lions and their prey in Nevada. In addition, the importance of mountain lions and interactions with the prey, especially wild horses, are important components of rangeland and mountain ecosystems.

Determining the Biological Health of Walker Lake, Nevada

This project will identify ecological differences between characteristics of a healthy and unhealthy river and lake ecosystems, and develop a decision tool to assess the efficacy of different water acquisitions to improve the health of Walker Lake and Walker River.

Effects Of Repeated Burning On Soil Nitrogen And Cheatgrass Biomass And Reproduction

Restoration of cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) dominated rangelands depends on controlling cheatgrass while simultaneously providing the conditions necessary for native species establishment.  The initial burns were conducted in 2008 and 2009; pre-burn data were collected in 2008 and post-burn data were collected in 2009 and 2010. This project is a continuation of the initial burns project, adding more personnel to complete the study.

Evaluating the interactive effects of grazing and hydrology on the Modoc Plateau Seasonal Wetland Plant Communities

The goal of our research is to assess the effects of grazing management on federally listed threatened grass using a series of ungrazed, exclosure treatments, including indirect effects associated with changing hydrology.

Field-Testing Competitive Native Plant Genotypes For Restoration In Cheatgrass-Invaded Rangelands

This project will determine if we can improve restoration in invaded rangelands by selecting native species with specific traits known to increase plant performance in the presence of cheatgrass, and will quantify the percent increase, if any, in establishment of these plants relative to commercially available seeds.

Identifying the Incidence and Understanding the Causes of Pneumonia in Nevada's Bighorn Sheep

Nevada's bighorn sheep are known to experience dramatic bouts of mortality associated with pneumonia. Using genetic data to identify the type of bacteria that are present in sick and dying sheep, the long-term goal with this research is to identify the primary factors involved in bighorn sheep pneumonia outbreaks in Nevada.
