Welcome to
ANSC 406/606
It may be the only
animal nutrition course you take at the UNR.
The course covers a wide range of topics including
digestive physiology, digestion and metabolism of nutrients, metabolic and
digestive disorders (i.e., nutrition and health), deficiency and toxicity of
nutrients, ration formulation, introduction to the rumen microorganisms, feeds
and their composition, evaluation of the nutritive value of feeds, and feeding
different animals such as beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, horses,
swine, dogs, and cats. The lectures will cover the basic aspects of these topics
while the laboratory sessions will cover the applied aspects. These include
visits to The Animal Nutrition Laboratory. The Laboratory sessions also will
include group projects and discussions on ration formulation and other applied
aspects of animal nutrition. I encourage you to ask nutritional questions as
they relate to humans, farm animals, or companion animals. Please take advantage
of this opportunity because it will be beneficial to all of us to relate the
information being taught to real life situations. This interaction will help you
to be prepared for a career in animal science or veterinary medicine.
Good luck to you.
Sincerely,
Hussein S. Hussein, Ph.D.
