BOOK:  Introduction to Animal Science

BY:  Leland S. Shapiro

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this class is to introduce students to the area of animal science and give them a strong appreciation and understanding of the many aspects of the livestock and poultry industry.  Comprehensive information and discussion will focus on biological principles of animal function and management for efficient livestock production.

 QUIZZES

Twenty point quizzes will be given on several Thursdays during the semester.  Quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class period.  Each quiz will cover material from the previous two or three class periods including chapter readings (Chapter Study Questions).  Make sure you are on time.  You will be given 10 to 15 minutes to complete the quiz once it is started.  Should you arrive late you will not be allowed to take the quiz.  Should you miss class that day you will receive a zero.

EVALUATION QUESTIONS AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER

It is in the best interest of the student to answer the evaluation questions at the end of each chapter discussed in class.  These questions will be used as possible quiz and exam questions.  (Do not hand in these questions to the instructor.)  If you have questions about your answers set an appointment up with your teaching assistant and she will help you with them.  Do not do this at the last minute but at least one – two days in advance of the quiz or exam.

 EXAMS

Four exams (100 points each), non-comprehensive.  One of the four exams is the final exam.  Approximately 3/4 of the exam will be from materials given in class; (i.e., notes, handouts) and 1/4 from chapter readings and evaluation questions listed at the end of each chapter.

*Exams will be given on days scheduled.  If an emergency should occur the professor must be notified before test time or the student receives a zero.
