On May 16th, 2002 a wine tasting was held at the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources to evaluate 3 white wines harvested at the University's Valley Road Vineyard in the year 2000. There were 9 people (5 men and 4 women) who filled out the tasting sheets. Tasting scores were broken down into 1 pt for appearance, 5 pts for aroma, 3 pts for taste, and 1 pt overall. A total of 10 pts were possible.
Gewürtztraminer grapes (2000) were harvested at 24.0 Brix, titratable acidity (TA) = 8.06 g/L and a pH = 3.19. The wine scored an average total score of 7.7 out of 10 by the tasters. 1/1 for appearance; 3.64/5 for aroma; 2.28/3 for taste and 0.92/1 overall. Riesling grapes (2000) were harvested at 21.4 Brix, TA = 6.47 g/L and pH = 3.30. The wine scored an average total score of 7.03. O.94/1 for appearance; 3.22/5 for aroma; 2.14/3 for taste and 0.75/1 overall. Some comments were: Almond taste, mellow; Clear, floral aroma, less acidic than Semillon; mild aroma, mellow nice fruity taste; smooth taste.
Semillion grapes (2000) were harvested at 22.4 Brix, TA = 7.88 g/L and pH = 3.15. The wine scored an average total score of 6.83. O.97/1 for appearance; 3.28/5 for aroma; 1.89/3 for taste and 0.69/1 overall. Some comments were: Apple aroma, slight bitter taste, good balance; Green apple aroma, sour, acidic lemon taste; Good appearance, slightly acid aroma, acidic taste; Clear, lemon and floral aroma, acidic and intense duration.
