The distinctive secondary wall ingrowths and consequent amplified plasma membrane surface area of transfer cells has been purported to facilitate apoplasmic/symplasmic membrane exchange of solutes at transport "bottlenecks" in plants. These specialized transport cells differentiate at the maternal/filial interface during seed development in a number of cereals and grain legumes.
