Horse researchThe U.S. horse industry is placed among the top industries, and as such it generates more than 25 billion dollars annually. The dynamics of the horse industry in Nevada is similar to that of the national level. It has grown far beyond expectations and now makes a significant economic contribution to the state. The Equine Science option is designed to provide knowledge and support to the horse industry, including those interested in the welfare of Nevada's feral horses.

The curriculum provides progressive advancement through theory and technique. Equine anatomy and physiology, behavior, conformation, riding, training and conditioning, nutrition, reproduction, farm business management and health management are a few of the topics examined at each level of study. All classes include hands-on sessions in a practical environment.

Career opportunities in the equine industry include: agribusiness firms, breed registries/associations, breeding farm management, equine welfare organizations, feed companies, horse health product firms, horse publications, horse show management, horse training and boarding, recreational horse activities and tack and equipment companies.

Equestrian CenterFacilities

Located at 1290 Valley Road, our facilities are within walking distance of the main campus.  The current facilities provide for research and instructional activity and serves as a laboratory for equine science and horsemanship classes.  Students can lease University horses and tack for use in horsemanship classes.

Private horses can be boarded on a space available basis.  Boarding fees include daily stall cleaning and cubed hay fed twice daily.  Dietary supplementation, if needed, is the responsibility of the horse owner.  Several services relative to the daily care of boarding horses are available on a fee basis.
