For the past three years, I have worked as a receptionist at Great Basin Equine, a large animal veterinary clinic in Gardnerville, NV. Working at a veterinary clinic was a great way to explore veterinary medicine as a career as well as being an opportunity to work with some wonderful people. For the past two summers, I worked for Deborah Johnson, training in Gardnerville for an internship. I had a great time traveling the west coast to attend horse shows where I groomed, braided, and helped exercise and warm-up horses for class. This year I had the opportunity to show in a Western Sidesaddle class for the first time. It was great fun and made me appreciate the women who were required to ride sidesaddle. Riding astride is definitely more comfortable for a long period of time! I am currently working for Sierra Biomedical, a research facility. I am enjoying the new experience and each day is always interesting. I have also house-sat for people when they are out of town. The most interesting animal I have taken care of was a parrot who could cat-call and sing, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
Interests:
I love riding and showing horses, particularly Arabians, going alpine skiing (the more fresh powder, the better!), curling up with a good book, camping, and doing anything related to being outside or with animals.
Why UNR College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources?
I chose to attend UNR because I really like the campus and what CABNR had to offer students interested in a career in veterinary medicine. The faculty and students I met were friendly and helpful and I thought attending school here would be a great experience. UNR is close to home so I can visit, yet I am far enough away to be on my own. The millennium scholarship was also an important factor in my decision.
