Formulating Adaptive Management Strategies for Restoring Forest Health in the Eastern Sierra Nevada

 

Due to exploitive harvesting during the Comstock era and fire suppression during the 20th century, forest health in much of the eastern Sierra Nevada is poor, necessitating forest restoration efforts such as thinning and prescribed fire to rectify insect and disease problems and reduce wildfire threat. Prior to large-scale implementation of remedial measures, an understanding of the impacts of potentially corrective management practices on stand health and productivity, nutrient cycling, and water quality is needed, along with information on the historical natural fire regime.  Read More...
