Department with Funding Support from NAES

Animal Biotechnology

The Department is providing a comprehensive education in the Animal Sciences, Animal Biotechnology and Pre-Veterinary Medicine that prepare our students for a productive career, graduate education, or acceptance into a professional curriculum. We are developing new centers of excellence in research and education that focus on our strengths in biotechnology, rangelands-livestock management equine science and extension education to meet the needs of our stakeholders and increase regional, national and international recognition of our programs. We also are transfering our knowledge and relevant information to University stakeholders through our extension education and outreach programs.

Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Biochemistry has taken the forefront in defining broadly based opportunities in biotechnology processes and applications that indicate the path for the biologically based future of the twenty-first century. This future will influence all phases of our lives from the quality of food and fiber to the preservation of natural resources and the medical biosciences. The molecular tools, which are being developed today, will lead to technologies to manage infectious diseases, cure metabolic and cellular dysfunction, and define the physical quality of life. This Department must provide a broad set of technical and conceptual capabilities that result in a cutting-edge perspective to discern the molecular events that underlie normal and aberrant life science functions in medicine, nutrition, agriculture, and environmental adaptation. In addition, the Department must be involved in the promoting life-long education and technology transfer necessary to disperse this information.

Human Development & Family Studies

The Department is a multi-disciplinary department in the College of Human and Community Sciences. Faculty generate knowledge through research and disseminate that knowledge through classroom instruction,community-based education programs, and publications. The Child and Family Research Center also is administered through the department and provides students with opportunities and experience in working with children and families. Strong department linkages are maintained with the Graham and Jean Sanford Center for Aging, Senator Alan Bible Center for Applied Research, Nevada Cooperative Extension, and the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station.

Natural Resources & Environmental Science

NRES has developed a vision to provide and apply scientific knowledge and understanding of inter-relationships among people, living organisms and environments, emphasizing the Intermountain West, through outreach in teaching, research and service. In doing so, it aspires to become the premier Department in the western United States with programmatic emphasis on the conservation, management and restoration of Great Basin and Sierra Nevada ecosystems, and to conduct research and education on environmental and natural resource issues of importance at the local, regional and global scales.

Nutrition

The main mission of the Department of Nutrition is to achieve excellence as a school wide university resource and to serve its students and community by contributing to new knowledge and skills at all levels of education (baccalaureate, graduate, professional and community). This mission will be achieved by a department that:

  • provides a high quality academic program which will meet the nutritional science, clinical dietetics and application needs of the entire University of Nevada system;
  • develops new courses and curricula;
  • establishes a solid research base; and
  • develops a service program where nutrition information can be assimilated.

Resource Economics

The Department of Resource Economics is recognized nationally and internationally as a leading academic unit in scholarship, instruction, and outreach. The Department’s core mission is improving the economic well-being of its constituents – the citizens of Nevada. The faculty will pursue this mission through high quality research on a broad range of topics. They will pass on their diverse mix of skills to the next generation of scholars and planners through rigorous and balanced academic programs. The Department spans most branches of agricultural economics and related areas; being strong in economic theory, applied economics, econometrics and actuarial studies. A significant amount of the research done in the department is policy-oriented. We have a significant track record in obtaining external research funding. Additionally, a number of the Department's academic faculty are engaged as consultants to various government departments and agencies.
