Effects of ash on soil pH

This figure illustrates the effects of ash on soil pH, extractable P and extractable SO4. Ash raises pH, which causes  SO4 to desorbe from soil colloids and become more available whereas the high Ca in ash causes P to precipitate as Ca-phosphates. thus, P availability decreased and S availability increaed after this particular fire (from Caldwell, 1999).
